Health Issues

  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

EU citizens must bring their personal EHIC that guarantees medical assistance within the Portuguese National Health Service (more: https://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=559 ). Please take into consideration that the EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance, as it does not cover healthcare provided in the private health system or other expenses, such as the cost of repatriation or compensation for lost or stolen goods and does not guarantee free services as each country has a different health system, so services that are free in your country of origin can be paid in Portugal (and vice-versa).

For non-EU citizens it is advisable to secure an adequate travel health insurance.

  • European Emergency Number

112 is the single European emergency telephone number, available throughout the European Union, free of charge. In the event of any emergency, 112 can be connected through fixed and mobile telephones. The call is free and will be answered immediately by the emergency centres that trigger the medical assistance.

  • Health Line 24 - 808 24 24 24

For health queries, available 24 hours a day, every day. For administrative contact (non-clinical), available from 8am to 10pm, every day. This 24 hour Health Line provides prioritization, advice and referral in case of illness. The cost of the call is the same as for a call to a landline.

  • Pharmacies
In general, pharmacies are open on weekdays between 9am and 7pm (some close for lunch from 1 to 3 p.m.) and on Saturdays between 9am and 1pm. They display an illuminated green cross outside when open at night. All of them have information posted on the door indicating the nearest pharmacies that are open at night (these “on service” pharmacies can be searched at https://www.farmaciasportuguesas.pt/catalogo/pesquisar-farmacias )
  • SNS Hospitals (Public Service)

The SNS hospitals in Lisbon are divided into three centers, each is composed of at least two hospitals. The Santa Marta Hospital is located in the central Avenida da Liberdade and Hospital São Francisco de Xavier is nearby ISCSP in Ajuda. Find out more: https://www.chlc.min-saude.pt/contactos/ )
